April 2015 Mueller Update

Written by Rick Krivoniak

On March 9th, Alamo Drafthouse announced they would locate at Mueller. Set to open in late summer 2016 across the Paseo from the Thinkery, the theater will feature six screens with more than 600 seats located on the second floor, with a planned bar/restaurant at street level. Alamo Drafthouse Mueller will also offer youth programming.

In Mueller’s Market District, the UPS Store opened in mid-March. In addition to shipping and packing, they offer mailbox, notary and digital printing & copying services. Nearby, MOD Pizza hopes to be open in April, and over on Barbara Jordan Blvd. between Jamba Juice and Wells Fargo, La Madeleine also expects to be open in April.

I missed information on the “Hooked on Mueller” event back on Sunday, February 8th. Texas Parks & Wildlife stocked Lake Park with 2000 rainbow trout and opened the lake for fishing with no license required. Kids were encouraged to participate, and rainbow trout recipe demonstrations were held at the adjacent Mueller Farmer’s Market. I will try to post early notice for any such future events.

Capital Metro is keeping tabs on the use of various stops in and around Mueller, but substantial changes will not happen until well after Berkman drive has been completed sometime in the first half of 2016. Changes in routes and stops are vetted through a process to allow input and consider the impacts on riders who rely on the bus for work or school. A small change may happen this year to the #37 route to allow better access to the HEB, Market District, and get riders a bit closer to Bartholomew Pool.

The 51st Street Vision project will also relocate some stops when it is implemented, though no start date is yet planned. The City’s Public Works and Transportation departments are anticipated to present an update at the May 9th WPNA meeting, which will be advertised to the wider community so those interested can attend. They may present at the April 18th Mueller Neighborhood Association meeting, which will also be open to any interested parties. The City has chosen to present to our well-attended association meetings rather than host a separate event.

D1 Council Member Ora Houston spoke at the March WPNA meeting and noted she will soon be making appointments to the over 60 City of Austin boards and commissions. Windsor Park also has a substantial number of D4 Council Member Greg Casar constituents, so the odds are good if you’re interested in serving. Apply online, and contact your Council Member’s office to let them know of your interest.

The next Robert Mueller Municipal Airport Plan Implementation Advisory Commission meeting is at 6PM, Tuesday, April 14, 2015, in the Carver Library Meeting Room 1, 1161 Angelina Street. Please send Mueller-related questions & comments to .
