Austin Neighbors Invited to Final Showing of Little Artist BIG ARTIST Exhibit at Pump Project Art Complex Saturday, May 10

Written by Carmen Maverick, Chula League

Every spring “Little Artists” from East Austin elementary schools learn how art — such as pottery, painting, film, and photography — moves from a budding idea to the marketplace. BIG ARTISTS provide their time and professional experience as working artists to guide their Little Artists to envision, plan, and create at least two pieces of artwork during the semester. Little Artist pieces are featured in an April opening night reception, along with a journal of the experience and a piece by their BIG ARTIST. One piece from each Little Artist is sold via auction at the annual Cherrywood Art Fair in December. Auction proceeds are donated back to the Little Artists’ school art programs.

More than 20 fifth and sixth graders from Blackshear, Maplewood, and Oak Springs elementary schools participated in the 2014 Little Artist BIG ARTIST program. Several of this year’s BIG ARTISTS are Cherrywood neighbors with a piece of their own work in the art show:

The budding artists and their professional artist mentors debuted their work April 24 at the Pump Project Art Complex. Artists, teachers, and other guests enjoyed a lively spring opening night reception that included of music performed by students from participating schools.

Artwork is available for viewing one final time this Saturday, May 10, 12–5 pm, at Pump Project, located in East Austin at 702 Shady Lane. Click here for a map.

“Our participating Little Artists benefit from a combination of mentorship and the opportunity to learn from a professional artist. BIG ARTISTS gain from that relationship as they see artistic exploration through the eyes of a child,” says LaBA Program Coordinator and photographer Jennifer M. Ramos.

Both the Little Artist BIG ARTIST program and the Cherrywood Art Fair are programs of Chula League, a non-profit organization dedicated to the valuable role of arts in East Austin neighborhoods. To date, Chula League has endowed more than $20,000 to East Austin schools from Cherrywood Art Fair Little Artist auction proceeds.
