Austin Sustainable Swap Comes to Cherrywood

Written by Emily Mathon

On Saturday December 20th, a cold and cloudy afternoon, I joined a small group of entrepreneurs and innovators at the Austin Sustainable Swap. Everyone was setting up their tables and Margarita, the event organizer, welcomed me in and explained the vision of the event. People come together to share their talents, skills and wares. Swapping, selling, and sharing were the themes of the day.

The tables and talents that were presented at this first event at Cherrywood Coffeehouse included: handmade jewelry, lotions, potpourri, and massage. Information was presented from non-profits including Full Spectrum Doula Collective and Mariposa Pathway. There were demonstrations for making ornaments, jewelry, and poi swinging (imagine flame juggling).

Here’s what you need to know. If you sell things that people want to buy, have a skill that you can share, or want to promote an event or cause – Consider going to the swap! If you have stuff that you’d like to unload or are in the market for some new-to-you items – Consider going to the swap. Items that aren’t swapped will go to Safe Place as a donation. Plus, being that Cherrywood is one of the unofficial community centers in our neighborhood – you are bound to run into a friend or neighbor!

Margarita is welcoming new folks for the next Swap, which is on Saturday, January 17th from 12-4 p.m. Go to http://www.austinsustainableswap.net/ and sign up. It’s awesome!
