CherryBiz Hosts Happy Hour on Building Home Studios

Written by Emily Mathon

The Cherrywood Business Council (CherryBiz) hosted the discussion “So you want to build a studio at your home?” over happy hour on March 2nd. Girard Kinney, AIA, architect and longtime Cherrywood resident, and his colleague Doug Powell with Kinney & Associates architects, presented many points to consider on the topic. He invited City of Austin Code Compliance officer, Moses Rodriguez, to answer questions related to code enforcement.

Some of the main takeaways were

1) If you are considering building a studio, you should consult a design professional, be clear about your goals (both general and specific), meet with a city reviewer & take notes.

2) There are  limits on home-based business, including subdivision restricted uses, signage, number of car trips per day, noise generated, smells produced, hazardous materials stored on site, offstreet parking required and other code provisions that must be observed. A handout was provided and an electronic copy can be obtained from .

Kinney and Rodriguez answered many questions from the 20 or so participants, who included artists, musicians, and other professionals and tradespersons working in Cherrywood and surrounding neighborhoods. One of the topics raised was how to coordinate a workspace with an accessory dwelling unit.
