Closing in on 600 Trees Planted in Cherrywood!

Written by Mike Damal

On Saturday, November 1st, 4 volunteers help plant and deliver 52 trees in the Cherrywood neighborhood.  For the 17th year we have planted 596 trees to date, which has contributed greatly to the dense tree canopy in Cherrywood.  Mike Sullivan,  Cynthia Lyon, Girard Kinney, and  I had an enjoyable morning planting trees, learning about the different types of trees and how to plant them, and meeting new neighbors.

Types of trees planted included burr, red, chinquapin, and live oak, cedar elms, desert willow, mexican plum, texas redbud, and texas mountain laurel.  All are excellent choices for our neighborhood. David Boston will also be planting three Montezuma cypress trees in the newly reconstructed creekbed of Willowbrook reach off of Maplewood Ave.

The fall is the best time to plant trees in Austin.  Our harsh summers make it difficult for newly planted trees–fall plantings give young trees time for their root systems to get established before the next summer.  Newly planted trees must also be monitored and watered for their first two years to ensure their survival.  To plant a tree and just leave it gives it a less than 50% chance for survival.  We have been fortunate that since the plantings we have received record rainfall.

Proceeds from the tree planting will benefit Cherrywood Green.  I am still awaiting a few payments.  Once I receive them I will let you know how much money we raised.  This is presently the main funding source for maintaining the Green.

We are very close to 600 trees which have been planted in the past 18 years (we skipped one year due to the drought).  I don’t know how many have lived, but I can walk or drive down any street in Cherrywood and find a tree that we have planted in the past years!
