RUST RED STUDIO, named for the two men responsible for building my beautiful painting residence, (my husband Rusty and my young redheaded son) will open its doors for the second week of the EAST AUSTIN STUDIO TOUR 2013 this weekend.   I have been painting professionally for over twenty years, moving to Austin in 1999 for my position at Texas Performing Arts and to focus on my studio art practice.

As a participating artist in the EAST AUSTIN STUDIO TOUR since 2004, I have exhibited at a variety of studios and collectives, including with our neighbors Jennifer Balkan and Roger Foster.  Just days after EAST 2010 wrapped, we broke ground on my new painting home.  RUST RED STUDIO was built by Rusty Cloyes and I with the help of our friends and an occasional babysitter over the following year.  2011 was the first year RUST RED STUDIO opened its doors to the public, ushering in a host of new work from an artist who finally had a room of her own.

My 2013 RUST RED STUDIOS E.A.S.T. exhibition features work from my painting series “to sea”, with sweeping seascapes and water scenes inspired by our oppressive drought.  You will also see intimate portraits of women from my series “AS YOU WILL, MAY YOU BE”, a project where artist and model worked in tandem to create the work, and finally you will see my painterly sky-scapes. My obsession with skies has expanded exponentially since arriving to Texas.  Never before have I seen such skies.  They continue to captivate me.

I hope you are able to make it out to my studio this weekend to celebrate the wonderful Austin art tradition of E.A.S.T. and meet your neighbors.  This Sunday night Nov. 24th at 6:00pm we will draw the winning raffle ticket for a huge sea-scape painting entitled “RISE”.  Come out and join the fun.  Perhaps you will walk away with this beautiful painting.
