East Austin Studio Tour is About to Take Cherrywood by Storm

Written by Christine Terrell, Adaptive Reuse Studios, Studio 17a, East Austin Studio Tour

The East Austin Studio Tour is by far one of the best events in a town chock-block full of amazing ones. I love that it has grown from the original dozen or so studios into a massive, two-weekend-long extravaganza featuring several hundred artists. Of course, none of it would have been possible without a town full of art lovers and supporters.

I’ve been fortunate to be part of the tour for the last five years and have been honored to host some amazing artists each year. As always, I like to feature work with an upcycle-y bent, but don’t limit the house to just that one criteria. This year stop No. 17 will feature work from Holli Brown Mosaics, Dish It Out! Jewelry, Liz Potter Photography, Barbara Irwin Found Object Art, and Tony Redman’s Blues Boxes. Now that I list it all here, I’m wondering where it’s all going to fit…

As much as I love to have art displayed all over the house, my favorite part of the tour is the ongoing demos that we always have up and running during the day. This year visitors will have a chance to learn how to hand-punch a perfect circle of tin, create a tiny encaustic collage with just one little heat tool and try your hand at some mosaic making. It’s possible you’ll even get to see some techniques for hand-coloring black and white photographs. Folks of all ages really seem to love a chance to not only see how the sausage is made, but get a chance to try it out for themselves.

E.A.S.T. is an Austin treasure. If you haven’t been lately, make a point to go to just three stops near your house. In this neighborhood that shouldn’t require you to walk much further than the end of your block.
