Halloween in and around Cherrywood, 2014 Round-up

It may have been 85 degrees today, but Halloween is in the air. Since I can hardly keep track of all the spooky festivities around here I thought I’d write a list of nearby opportunities to dress up in a costume.

Friday, October 24

The Bullock Texas State History Museum is hosting a family-friendly Spooktacular. Put on your costumes and head over to the museum for the Halloween extravaganza, featuring performances, games, activities, art, and more for kids ages five and up. Free! 5-8 p.m., 1800 Congress Ave.

Saturday, October 25

The Vortex and East Austin Handmade Arts Market are throwing A Shockabilly Halloween Party–a day of costumes and Halloween revelry. There will be a Pinup and a Halloween Costume Contest for prizes, and other ghoulish festivities, like a pumpkin carve-off! 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 2307 Manor Rd.

Maplewood Fall Fest and Haunted Mansion Dancer Party! Maplewood Elementary School. Dunk your favorite teacher in the dunking booth, bounce to your hearts content, get some cake at the cake walk, and get scared in the Haunted Portable Number 7 HOUSE OF TERROR! 5-7 p.m., 3808 Maplewood Ave.

School House Pub is hosting an evil pumpkin carving contest 5-7 p.m., 2207 Manor Rd.

Sunday, October 26

Party all day at Viva Streets Austin-Mueller and then stop at home for your costume and a pumpkin before going to the Pumpkin Carving and Decorating Party organized by Cherrywood and Wilshire Wood neighbors at Eastwoods Park. The hosts will bring all the glitter, paints, and googly eyes your might need, and take a collection for pizza. Feel free to bring sides, drinks, or desserts for the potluck. 4-7 p.m., 3001 Harris Park Ave.

Friday, October 31

Every year neighbors along French Place generously open their doors to hordes of trick-or-treaters for the French Place Halloween parade. Participants (adults, kids, dogs, etc.) gather at 28th and French Place at 5:30 p.m., and the parade starts at 6 p.m. on its way down to Cherrywood Green.

The Thinkery is throwing a Halloween Hootenanny, with spooky science and craft activities, a not so scary Storytime and a reptile variety show. 6-8:30, 1830 Simond Ave.

Attention Boos & Gouls! Come celebrate the holiday with at the in.gredients Halloween Party with candy for kids (big and small), live music and a costume contest with prizes for the winners. So get your best costume out and join the fun! 7-10 p.m., 2610 Manor Rd.

Cherrywood Coffeehouse presents professional storytellers Lorene Stilwell and David Thompson in Ghouls and Ghosties and Long-leggedly Beasties–a night of eerie tales and ghastly ghost stories from the Celtic lands of Britain and Ireland.” 7-9 p.m., 1400 E. 38 1/2 St.
