“Holga” Photography Exhibit at Cherrywood Coffeehouse

Written by Liz Potter

Currently on display at the Cherrywood Coffeehouse is a large selection of my black and white photography, taken with a plastic lens camera called a Holga. The work spans the time between 1990 and a few weeks ago.

I graduated from UT in 1990 with a degree in photojournalism, and soon after that I picked up this strange little camera that uses medium format film at the Maine Photographic Workshops. I instantly fell in love with the quirky look and the way the images are reminiscent of old photography, before everything became so sharp and defined.

The camera has a plastic body and lens, and I only get 12 exposures with each roll of film. From these 12 exposures, I’m lucky if I get even one image that’s printable. It can be challenging! There’s something about it though that taps into the romance of photography – the capturing of memories, which are snippets of time that may not represent the truth of what actually happened.

I shoot life around me, which can be something odd I see on the side of the road, portraits of interesting people I meet, or documenting an experience I know will be captured well with my little plastic camera.

The images hanging in the Coffeehouse are all reproduction prints of the original images I printed in a traditional darkroom. For more information about me or my work, please visit www.lizpotterphotography.com.  The show will run through September 2nd. Stop by and check it out!
