I-35 Mods And Upper Decks

There has been some talk by the Texas Department of Transportation for several months now regarding modifications to I-35. Of the miles of concrete carrying vehicles through our city, the few that most affect Cherrywood are between 51st St. and MLK Blvd.  TxDOT calls this “Segment 4.”

Throughout Segment 4, TxDOT is talking about removing some of the existing on/off ramps, relocating others, limiting turns from east-west onto the north-south feeder lanes, moving a stretch of the northbound feeder road to the east, rebuilding east-west bridges, and adding new northbound and southbound lanes to the existing surface level lanes.

The most recent surprise announcement is TxDOT’s proposal to add lanes to the upper decks. These changes effectively add six lanes of new traffic over this segment of the highway.

Twelve neighborhoods that are close to the highway — one being Cherrywood — have formed a coalition to be a voice of the neighborhoods in the discussion. The group is called North Central I-35 Neighborhoods Coalition 2 (NCINC2), and they meet regularly to discuss neighborhood concerns about I-35 and to take the results back to TxDOT and the City of Austin.

As with all neighborhood meetings, NCINC2 meetings are open for anyone to attend. The meetings are held at the Fannie Mae Conservatory, 1902 E. 22nd St. The next meeting is scheduled for August 22 at 2:00 PM.
