Willowbrook Reach Reassessment

In early May, CNA representatives met with City of Austin staff members Mike Kelly, Chris Calvery, George Walker, Mateo Scoggins, and Roxanne Jackson, to discuss the planned Watershed Department Project at Willowbrook Reach (see insert "City of Austin Plans Major Project for Neighborhood Greenbelt" in the May 2010 issue of the FLEA). The City of Austin explained that the Reach - through the determined efforts of neighbors and Mother Nature over the years - is already healthier than it was when they originally assessed it in 1997. After performing some comparative measurements and doing a new assessment, they also found that very little to no new erosion has occurred since their last assessment 13 years ago.

To make a long story short, the City of Austin reassessed the condition of the creek and has determined that there's no need to proceed with their current plan.

That is not the end of the story, of course! The two wastewater lines crossing the creek must be dealt with, and there are other possible outcomes for the Project. The City of Austin will be present at the CNA Quarterly Meeting on Wednesday, May 19 to update the neighborhood. They will officially begin a new process for looking at changes to the Reach, primarily related to the wastewater lines. The neighborhood will begin meeting with the City of Austin on a monthly basis in July to talk about how they will deal with the wastewater lines, how we might decrease pollution at the Reach, the installation of rainwater swales, and how we might increase the wildlife habitat, among other things. We will also continue to work with the City on establishing a mowing schedule, mowing requirements and habitat restoration.

There will be lots of opportunity for neighborhood involvement and input, and I'm positive that this new direction will be very good for Willowbrook Reach.

Thanks to the City of Austin and concerned Cherrywood neighbors for their willingness to reassess the City’s proposed plan and stop it from moving forward. For more up-to-date information, please visit the Friends and Lovers of Willowbrook Reach (FLWR)’s blog at flwr.blogspot.com.

CNA Sidewalk Philosophy & Plan (Conclusion)
Written by Jeremy B. Mazur, CNA Steering Committee Chair

After some lengthy, interesting discussion, the CNA Steering Committee, with the help of neighbors, has arrived at a concensus regarding a revised sidewalk philosophy statement.  That statement is as follows:

"The Cherrywood Neighborhood stands by its commitment to safe, walkable streets.  The Cherrywood Neighborhood favors the establishment and maintentance of sidewalks along commercial corridors, and within internal corridors to the extent necessary to establish safe connectivity to perimeter destinations and to enhance safety and quality of life.  There should be a sidewalk within two blocks of every residence to provide access to the entire sidewalk system.  Internal sidewalks, where warranted, should generally be on only one side of the street."

On behalf of the Cherrywood Neighborhood Association's Steering Committee, we welcome and look forward to your participation in this discussion.
