January 22 Idea Workshop to Address Manor Road Transportation and Parking

Written by the Parking Workshop Team

The four neighborhoods abutting Manor Road from Airport Blvd. to IH-35 (Cherrywood, Blackland, Rogers-Washington/Holy Cross and Austin Heights) are hosting an Idea Workshop to address overflow parking issues along Manor Road.

Manor Parking Map

While many of the Manor Road businesses are local and many of those local ones are owned and/or managed by residents living within the boundaries of the abutting neighborhoods; and while we support these businesses and want them to succeed; the fact is that there is an ever-increasing problem of overflow parking into the surrounding neighborhoods.

So, the primary purpose of this Workshop is to identify the problem areas and explore solutions.  It is a conversation among us neighbors about a problem that affects all of us, particularly folks living close to our perimeter corridors.  While this workshop will focus on Manor Road, lessons learned from this effort will be valuable as MLK, IH35 Feeder Road, E38th½ and Airport Boulevard corridor issues are addressed in the future.

We encourage both residents and business representatives to attend.  We will have representatives from the city there to provide technical back up regarding the tools available.  Potential solutions include designated parking zones, the evolving Residential Parking Permit (RPP) program, the pedestrian and bicycle plans, parallel parking, shared parking, off-site parking, future garages, valet parking, transit and other tools and policies.  A representative of UT will be there to talk about how UT, often a contributor to the overflow parking problem in Blackland and SW Cherrywood, may become part of a solution in the future.

Some refreshments will be provided and participants are welcome to bring a brown bag if they want to eat supper there (we are assuming most folks will eat their main evening meal before or after the workshop). The facility has wifi, a large video screen (we plan to use Google Streetview to focus on problem areas) as well as restrooms, refrigerator, plenty of chairs and a large table where we will all work on overlays of a map of the street.

Please come and bring your ideas, and sign up at the door with your contact information so that we can get back to you!  We look forward to seeing you this Wednesday evening!
