Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Goats: Cherrywood’s 18th Annual Fourth of July Parade

Sorry, Senator Kirk Watson, but the goats have my vote. A pair of bovine beauties decked out in the colors of Old Glory upstaged the appearance of our representative at this year’s 18th annual Cherrywood Fourth of July Parade.

As scads of people and bubbles (the latter spewing from a particularly good portable bubble machine) drifted together down French Place to Cherrywood Green, the young and old alike marveled at these prehensile-lipped paragons of Liberty. They cloven-hoofed pair behaved better than some humans in the crowd (and I speak here of adults, not children, who were all great, even on sugar). As one dog made his own bid for independence by breaking from his leash and another slunk home in the midst of a panic attack, the goats merrily bleated down the street, seemingly caught up in the star-spangled fervor that gripped the crowd.

Many thanks to organizers Jeanne Arbuckle and Ray Jordan—as well as all the other volunteers—for another great parade.
