Manor Road Businesses Explore Creation of IBIZ District

Written by Sarah Biggerstaff

On May 5, the Cherrywood Business Council (CherryBiz) hosted a discussion about the creation of a Manor Road IBIZ District at it’s monthly happy hour. Rebekka Adams, IBIZ District Director for the Austin Independent Business Alliance (AIBA) spoke with representatives from several Manor Road businesses and neighbors.

The Austin Independent Business Alliance is a non-profit organization that supports and promotes locally owned businesses in Austin. One of their programs is the creation and promotion of IBIZ Districts, Independent Business Districts, which are commercial corridors that are 75% or more locally owned. Adams said “These are the places that make our city unique. They are the places where we eat, drink, and shop, supporting our local economy. Manor Road is one of these special places; it full of some amazing locally owned businesses which creates our Austin culture.”

There are currently eight IBIZ Districts in Austin, including East Sixth, North Loop, and West Lynn. Manor Road meets the initial criteria, including the minimum number of local businesses operating from a brick and mortar location as well as the street being as least one mile in length for walk ability purposes. A successful discussion over Cinco de Mayo refreshments concluded that the next step would be for the Manor Road businesses to determine which one would take on a leadership role in getting this process going.

Adams later said “Manor Road is ripe to become an IBIZ District; the street is full of locally owned businesses who contribute to not just the neighborhood, but also to the culture of Austin. We were thrilled to meet with some of the local business owners on Manor Road. There is an energy here that can help grow a strong and successful IBIZ District. The business owners are engaged not only in their businesses, but also the community around them, and supporting and promoting their neighbors. We look forward to working more closely with these businesses on the potential creation of an IBIZ District.”
