May 2014 Mueller Update

Written by Rick Krivoniak

Aviation ceased at RMMA in May of 1999, fifteen years ago! Five years later, the Austin City Council adopted the Mueller Master Plan, created by ROMA Design Group and now under the wing of the local McCann Adams Studio. On Saturday, May 10th, Catellus is celebrating that milestone and inviting the Austin community to a free, Mueller 10th birthday celebration at the Browning Hangar and Lake Park from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The birthday celebration will include paddle boating on the lake, hamster balls, a live DJ, food trucks, birthday cake and a giant piñata. Free giveaways and exciting surprises will join several other family-friendly activities.

Though slowed a bit by the 2008-2010 economy, in the ten years since the Master Plan has been in place, around 3,600 Mueller residents have moved into 1,900 homes, rowhouses, condominiums and apartments. Another 3,900 employees now work in the 1.8 million square feet of institutional, commercial or retail space constructed at Mueller, with Dell Children’s Medical Center being the largest employer. Almost 5 miles of trails wind through 75 acres of parks. Mueller is now around one-third complete and building out at a pace that reflects Austin’s recent rise to the 11th largest city in the USA.

New businesses at Mueller include Smashburger on Lancaster, near the recently opened Residence Inn Marriott on the 51st Street corner, and Twin Liquors newest store just west of the HEB. Torchy’s Tacos are in the design and permitting phase for the kitchen and interior of their 51st at Berkman location, and still hoping for a summertime opening. Mueller’s Southwest Greenway, stretching along Anchor Lane, received an Honor Award from the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects at a San Antonio reception on April 3, 2014. The area was a paved airport parking lot for about 50 years before Catellus, the City of Austin, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, ValleyCrest Landscape, Bury (engineers) and McCann Adams Studio collaborated to restore the native Blackland Prairie habitat that once stretched from Texas to Canada. This Greenway serves a role in stormwater management, water filtration and the capture of atmospheric pollutants.

The next Robert Mueller Municipal Airport Plan Implementation Advisory Commission meeting is Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 6PM in Meeting Room 1 of the Carver Library, 1161 Angelina Street. Please send Mueller-related questions & comments to .
