Mi Madre’s Hosts 25th Anniversary Bash on April 11

Written by Katie Jo Dixon

I’ve had the pleasure of calling Cherrywood home for 15 years now. Mi Madre’s has always been a staple of the neighborhood for the time that I have been here. With the surge of new restaurants and bars on Manor Road, Mi Madre’s continuing presence gives me a sense of nostalgia and peace admit the many changes and transitions that Cherrywood is experiencing.

Mi Madre’s celebrated their 25th year here on Saturday April 11th. It felt like going to a family reunion. Not only were the family members of Mi Madre’s at the celebration, there was also the neighborhood family that I have come to know and love. There were so many familiar faces that I recognized that it felt like I was back in Austin 15 years ago. At that time whenever I went out about town I always ran into someone I knew.

The traditional food at Mi Madre’s was accentuated at the party with outdoor vendors selling Elote (corn), popcorn, and Raspas (snow cones). Calavera (skelelton) piñatas hung from the rafters of the outdoor tent, as it was expected to rain that day. The burrito eating contest was won by a contestant that consumed 3 burritos, and the musicians and DJs set the atmosphere feel like an outdoor block party. The headlining band, Cilantro Boombox, a local group with a Latin fusion sound, filled the tent with family and friends dancing to the grooves. Confetti colored the floor, and beach balls were tossed through the air.

I left Mi Madre’s 25th anniversary party feeling like I got to get in touch with the old East Austin that I fell in love when I first moved to town. I am so glad that they are still here as a staple of the Cherrywood neighborhood. I will continue to enjoy Mi Madre’s breakfast tacos, and now I can come back for lunch and dinner too.
