Neighbor Carrie Klypchak Directs “The Motherf**ker with the Hat” for Capital T Theatre

Written by Carrie Klypchak

Howdy, neighbors! My husband, pup, and I are currently lucky enough to live in the beautiful Cherrywood neighborhood while I am on Faculty Development Leave (what they now call the formerly-known “sabbatical”) from Texas A&M University-Commerce. I am a theatre professor, actor, dramaturg, performance scholar, and director and have trained and worked across the country and abroad. While we’re here enjoying our Cherrywood digs through December, I’m working with Austin’s own Capital T Theatre on three different shows.

One of the shows that I have directed for Cap T, THE MOTHERF**KER WITH THE HAT by Stephen Adly Guirgis, is currently playing at Hyde Park Theatre, August 8-31 (Thursdays through Saturdays). Obviously, the show is “a little” foul-mouthed and a lot edgy; it’s also laugh-out-loud hilarious, while still being an immensely powerful look into love and other addictions. It’s a roller coaster ride that keeps you laughing and rips at your heart, for sure!

At Cap T, we are perhaps best known for producing high-quality scripts that question “grand-truths” and “master-narratives” in contemporary society, and MOTHERF**KER is no exception. The power of the script and the roles have attracted some huge-named, and immensely talented actors to perform in the play (including, of course, Cap T’s current, amazing cast of Austin award-winners and power-house favorites, including Ben Wolfe, Indigo Rael, Jude Hickey, Rommel Sulit, Antoinette Robinson, and Aaron Alexander).

MOTHERF**KER received a Broadway premiere in 2011 – starring Bobby Cannavale and Chris Rock. It was rightly nominated for all sorts of fancy awards including The Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and The Tony Award for Best Play (amongst a slew of others) and won several major, individual performance awards. And Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s production of the play starred Jimmy Smits and John Ortiz.

Cap T is so honored to have received the rights to perform this powerful piece for Austin, and I am thrilled to share this beautiful script. I hope that you come and join us for the show, friends!  Fair warning: the show contains foul language, nudity, and a hat.  Tix and info:
