Neighbor hosts Keep Austin Affordable house party

On July 1 a number of Cherrywood neighbors gathered at a house party I hosted at my home to meet with Samir Sheth, a representative of Keep Austin Affordable, and to discuss current issues relating to affordable housing in Austin.

In our immediate area we can see examples of affordable housing: The M Station complex between Manor and MLK, The Wildflower Terrace in Mueller, and others.

At the house party we talked about:

– the numerous non-profit groups that are seeking to increase the availability of affordable housing,

– the importance of developing affordable housing throughout the whole Austin area,

– the history of city bonds – past and future, as a source of financing ,

– the economics of issuing bonds – current interest rates, many-times over matching federal funds and a multiplier- effect on the local economy,

– exploring some personal stories and novel ideas for creative ways to tackle the problem.

This was not the first Keep Austin Affordable gathering in Cherrywood this year. Cynthia and Dave Lyon hosted a gathering in May, and, with the probability of a housing bond on the November ballot, there will likely be more opportunities to get together, share ideas and information, and promote ways to keep Austin Austin.

If you would like to learn more about how access to affordable housing affects all Austinites, want to host a house party, Keep Austin Affordable would be happy to hear from you.
