On June 12th we celebrated Canopy’s one-year birthday along with the Grand Opening of its newest buildings.  I moved my studio Melissa Borrell Design into Canopy when it first opened in February 2013, and it’s been a super exciting year that gets better every day!  I love being part of a community of other like-minded local artists, designers, and makers who are all bursting with inspiration. My studio is a space where I can welcome visitors to see the jewelry, home accessories, sculptures and other projects I’m working on.

I have been living in Austin for four years and am getting known around town for my jewelry, which I sell both online and to museum stores around the country as well as at the Blue Genie Art Bazaar every holiday season.

I also create sculptural designs for commercial, residential and public art installations.  The GloWave was a TEMPO project commissioned by Austin Art in Public Places.  It was in Little Stacey Park for three months this spring.  It was really cool that so many people who came into my studio for the party recognized my work because they had seen the sculpture.  I just de-installed the sculptures a couple of weeks ago.  One of the GloWave sculptures is going to be installed at the Bee Caves Sculpture Park soon; the other two were bought by individuals who are installing the pieces in their yards.

A lot of people recognize my work from the Blue Genie, and it’s fun to be neighbors with them!  In addition to Blue Genie, the Canopy complex is home to Big Medium, Pollen Floral Art, Son of a Sailor Jewelry, Art Science Gallery, Keith Kreeger, You’re Welcome Studio, and so many talented artists.

The Canopy Grand Opening was a huge success.  My studio was so packed with visitors that I didn’t get a chance to take in the whole event.  My friends from Liber and Co. were serving delicious cocktails in my studio in addition to all of the tasty treats outside.   With drinks and music and food, it was quite a party!  It’s great to see how much an impact we can have when we all work together; everyone sent out invitations and press releases, and the turn out was beyond what we expected.  We’d love to see you at Canopy!  Feel free to call if you’d like to visit my studio. I’m happy to have visitors, but since I don’t have regular hours, just call or email to arrange a time in advance at 512-507-4545 or
