Neighbors Host Fundraiser for Typhoon Victims

This past weekend a neighborhood family hosted an informal gathering in their backyard to raise money for AMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team) & AMURTEL (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team, Women & Children), who are working on five islands in the Philippines. The family has a direct connection to these teams, and the dollars will directly serve people affected by Super-Typhoon Haiyan.

Seven musical acts, including Austin Youth Samba Orchestra, The If Only’s, the Dead Squirrel’s (the children of the home and a cousin), plus The Face Melters performed for friends, family, and neighbors alike. The family pledged to match the first $1,000 donated, and with over 100 adults and kids attending the event, awareness of the situation was raised, and over $2,400 will be sent to help disaster relief in the Philippines!

AMURT relief teams on Leyte, Panay and Bantayan islands, and another in northern Cebu province, have all been providing cooked food and bottled water; a further team on Samar island assessed the worst-affected areas and is preparing for a longer-term recovery intervention. In Tacloban, AMURT has 22 stoves operating around the clock, the only source of cooked food and rice for the homeless and hungry survivors of the disaster. In some outlying areas, AMURT is also providing basic medical care to the many people with injuries that remain untreated due to the lack of medical supplies. The relief teams have established a base in what remains of Tacloban’s City Hall, but has also been expanding feeding programs to many far-flung towns around the city. AMURT is continuing to explore ways to help these communities to rebuild.

If you would like to contribute to the AMURT volunteers working around the clock in the Philippines, the family are still collecting donations. You can send a paypal donation to , or send an email to the same address arrange for cash or check contributions.

Support is needed for the teams in the Philippines to provide immediate relief, and to restore local economic capacity for the longer haul. Your donated dollars will directly support these objectives!
