Schieffer Willowbrook Conducting Vote by Mail on Community Garden

The Schieffer Willowbrook Neighborhood Association (ED: overlapping with the northeast quadrant of Cherrywood), held its fall meeting on November 7, and attendees decided to hold vote by mail on whether to support the proposed community garden at Patterson Park.

Mark Smolen and Brit Schlinke presented the plan that the community garden task force has developed over the last three years, including physical design, bylaws, access and parking, and funding. The garden’s latest design proposes the garden be located on the Southeastern edge of Patterson Park, and is currently going through the neighborhood approval processes. For more information on the garden, read the earlier post by Smolen.

Lisa Fuka, an outspoken opponent of the garden, made the case against it. She argued that public parkland should not be fenced off and use restricted to a limited number of users, and that Patterson Park is used by Austinites beyond the immediate area who have other priorities for the space.

The initial proposal for the garden was approved by the Cherrywood and Wilshire Wood/Delwood 1 neighborhood associations, as well as the Upper Boggy Creek contact team (representing six area neighborhoods, including Cherrywood and WW/D1). The revision has been approved by Cherrywood and Wilshire Wood/Delwood 1. The Schieffer Willowbrook ballots are to be mailed directly to the Austin Parks and Recreation Department by December 10.
