Schieffer-Willowbrook Hosts District 9 Debate

On Tuesday, Oct. 7 the Schieffer-Willowbrook Neighborhood Association hosted the Upper Boggy Creek Neighborhood Planning Team’s District 9 city council candidate forum at Genesis Presbyterian Church. All three D9 candidates, Erin McGann, Chris Riley, and Kathie Tovo participated. Given the number of forums these candidates have been participating in since the beginning of the 2014 10-1 campaign season I was impressed with their engagement. I guess those late nights on the dais for Riley and Tovo has them conditioned for never ending discussions, and McGann managed to stay right there with them so if Erin wins the chair I am pretty sure she will be able to pull a few all nighters on the dais with the other 10 council chairs.

The meeting moved along smoothly from the beginning all the way through the ninety minute schedule moderated by the Drs. Henry, with Kenneth presenting at first the predefined UBC questions followed by questions from the audience, and Deana making sure those talky politicians didn’t run over their time allocations. Kenneth and Deana Henry are residents of Austin Heights Neighborhood Association which is not even in D9 so thank you both for your neighborly support!

In talking with people after the meeting several said they were undecided on who they would vote for before the forum but afterwards had made their decisions and are ready to cast their ballots! In my mind that is a testament that the candidates were able to convincingly articulate their platforms.

I’ve made my decision. If you want to watch some of the debates the candidates have had around town, you can listen from the comfort of your home. I suggest the D9 Ballot Boxing video on YouTube. We the people spoke loudly in 2012 for a 10-1 City Council. Let’s now speak just as loudly about who we want on it. Listen to the candidates and be ready to vote in November!
