Neighbors participate in Smarter Spaces Tour

Written by Susan Patterson

On Saturday September 7th Robert Isaacson (owner of Round Rock Remodeling and my other half) and I opened our newly renovated home for the 2013 “Smarter Spaces” Austin Modern Home Tour.  This particular tour is for homes 2500 sq ft and less that make the best use of limited space.

We bought this home in May of 2012 and took almost a year to transform it into what we have today.  We took a lot of it down to studs.  We found original longleaf pine and oak under the carpet which we  restored.

It was originally 2 bedrooms with 2.5 baths and 4 living areas including the garage that had been converted.  We turned it back into a garage and used the large sunroom to convert into a master suite making it 3 bedrooms/3.5 baths.

Originally we bought this house with the intent to fix and flip but instead fell in love with the house and the neighborhood so we decided to make it our own – we love it!  Everyone we have met has been exceptionally nice and it feels like we’re living in Mayberry but yet right in the middle of everything!  Robert and I love to go hear live music and dance so moving into Austin from Round Rock has been great.  It was important to us to keep the immense character of the house while making it modern and livable.

There were approximately 200 people who came through on the tour.  Everyone was very complimentary and respectful of our home.

As you know homes built back in that time period (1950) had large rooms but not much storage.  The kitchen didn’t even have a pantry!  We have done numerous improvements to add to the storage/usage of the home.  We put roll-out drawers in a bathroom cabinet that was so deep you couldn’t reach the back.  A linen closet and wall to wall storage cabinets were added – even pull out rods in the wall next to the dryer to hang your clothes on!  The kitchen has several space saving features that go a long way to create more space.

We love to sit in the rocking chairs on our front porch and wave to neighbors as they walk by.  Please feel free to stop by.  We’d love to meet you.
