Thinkery Opens in Mueller

The Thinkery, the new Austin children’s museum, opened to the public on December 7th in the Mueller development. My family has been watching the red building go up for months and my son and I were thrilled to attend the members’ preview on the previous weekend. Both of us had a blast!

They had timed entry tickets available to manage the crowds, so although it was busy it was not overcrowded. My three year old literally ran from exhibit to exhibit, but our favorites were the giant plexiglass wall for painting on with watercolors, the glowing Light Lab, the Currents water playroom (where everyone wears aprons and expects to get soaked), and the Kitchen Lab, where we made plastic animals in a simple science activity. There’s also an Innovators Workshop and Spark Shop for bigger kids to do some creative design, a Fresh! Farmer’s Market area where kids can make their parents meals and play in a chicken coop (is the rest of the country as bonkers about chickens as Austin is?), and the awesome Bloom zone for babies and toddlers, which is filled with surreal giant carrots, mirrors, tents, and tunnels. The spacey Climber in their backyard is totally unique and terrifying, but there are apparently tons of kids who are braver than I am because it was packed.

I love living across the street from Mueller and all it has to offer, but the Thinkery is really special and I’m sure it’s going to be a big part of our lives for years to come.
