VORTEX Celebrating 25th Birthday with Fundraiser

The VORTEX Repertory Company just turned 25 years old and celebrated with a fantastic birthday bash on January 10. They are raising funds for an urgently needed new lighting system as a 25th birthday present for themselves through a Kickstarter campaign.

The VORTEX opened its doors in 1988 and moved to its permanent location in the corrugated steel warehouse on Manor Rd. in 1994.  Aaccording to the Austin Chronicle since then they’ve presented “more ritual-based theatre, more cyber-operas, more transgressive takes on stage classics, more unabashedly erotic spectacles than any other dozen companies in, probably, the entire Southwest.”

The theater and its Butterfly Bar helped to turn Manor Rd. into a hub of creativity and community in East Austin, and it was all on display a their fabulous 25th birthday gala. The party included a Madhatter’s Faery Tea Party for kids, live music, theater and dance by VORTEX favorites, aerial performances, tarot readings, and more.

In addition to all manner of performance art, The VORTEX and Butterfly bar have hosted countless community events, from monthly meetings of the Upper Boggy Creek Planning Team and Friends of Patterson Park to family happy hours for the East Side Mommas and other groups.

Check out the  their Kickstarter video, and consider donating to the Illuminate! campaign. It wraps up today, Valentine’s Day at 11pm.
