Waste Collection Not Wasted

Neighbors bring out their h-waste

Over Memorial Day weekend the Cherrywood Neighborhood Association held its first household waste collection at Cherrywood Green, helping liberate neighbors from dreaded accumulations of not-in-the-landfill items like paint, oil, batteries, and dead electronics.

Response was enthusiastic, despite the mini-Memorial Day deluge, resulting in three truckloads of good riddance to be hauled off to the City of Austin’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility during its normal business hours Tuesday. Thirty-eight Cherrywood households contributed to the grubby cargo.

Offering the service meant that neighbors would be spared having to schedule a drive to far southeast Austin during work hours — two strong reasons to put off dealing with that pile of used paint cans in the garage.

Once all the items were collected, we stored them for the weekend just around the corner from Cherrywood Green, at a curbside location graciously provided by Marjorie Daw House, a new co-op in the neighborhood. It took two trips to the City facility to remove it all.

Many thanks to all the neighbors who turned out, to DonJon Vonavitch and the CNA Hazardous Waste Committee, Jules Kniolek, Mike Sullivan and others for making this effort such a big success.

With such a positive initial response, the CNA has good reason to continue the service and organize these collections on a regular basis.
